Amazon’s Q4 2013 earnings are out, and while sales are up the company failed to meet Wall Street expectations. During the company’s earnings call, Amazon CFO Tom Szkutak revealed some upsetting news: the company may soon boost the price of its Amazon Prime service, which provides free two-day shipping, unlimited access to 41,000 movies and TV episodes and more than 350,000 Kindle eBook titles, for $79 a year.
Amazon hasn’t changed the price of Prime since 2005, nine years ago, and it may have to do so in an effort to keep up with rising costs. The price could go up by between $20 and $40 per year, which isn’t exactly the end of the world for the service Amazon provides. Still, it’s not exactly a drop in the bucket considering the total cost would come up to $99 – $119. Is it worth the cost bump?
That all depends on how much you use the service. If you’re like us and rely on it for shipping everything from books to new electronics and even groceries, while also taking advantage of Amazon Instant, than the cost can become negligible. If you’re only ordering a few things from Amazon each year, then it may not be worth it in the long haul. Amazon hasn’t said whether or not the change is definite, but we’ll let you know if it happens.
