At long last Marvel has released the first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer, and it looks unlike any other film we have seen come out of the studio.
While characters such as Captain America and Iron Man were known outside of the world of comic book fans prior to their hugely successful films, the Guardians of the Galaxy is one of those niche titles that even some comic book fans would say, “Oh yeah… I think I’ve heard of them.” In short, this film could end up being the biggest risk yet for Marvel as it is going to have to educate the public as to what they can expect from this rag-tag team of of galactic wanders.
That education started last night with the debut of the first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer airing during Jimmy Kimmel Live. It went only shortly afterwards, and it is sure to have left some people scratching their heads… especially when they saw part of the team is made up of a raccoon and a tree. Yes, as a lifelong fan of comic books, I can honestly say even I am amazed that I will be seeing a movie this year that features Rocket Raccoon. The geeks have truly inherited the Earth.
While this film looks beautiful, it looks so unlike any other film put out by Marvel and Disney that it should be interesting to see how audiences react. It is sandwiched between the releases of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, so Marvel should be doing okay financially if this movie doesn’t work, but it is sure to be hoping to launch another successful franchise to add to its roster.
