TSA Requiring Extra Screening of Electronics on U.S. Bound Flights

Travelers bound for the United States need to be prepared to turn on any or all of their electronics before boarding their flight.

The TSA announced on Sunday that passengers coming to the U.S. on flights from certain cities in Europe and the Middle East may undergo new screening policies before they are allowed to board. In addition to increased screening for traces of explosive residue and more attention being paid to shoes, passengers may be asked to power on electronics such as phones and laptops. Those items that are unable to power on will not be allowed on to planes and the passenger then may be put under additional screening.

Speaking on Sunday on Meet the Press, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson said that he doubted the measures would be appearing in U.S. airports any time soon. I believe that we’ve taken the appropriate measures to deal with the existing situation and not unnecessarily burden the traveling public.”

This is doubtful to be something that is enacted overnight as the TSA will have to work with the governments of the targeted countries as well as the administrations of the different airports. But if you are planning to come to the U.S. any time soon, or about to return from a vacation, make sure your gadgets are all topped up with power before you head to the security screening area at the airport.
