Holiday Gadget Gift Guide 2014: Gadgets and Gizmos a plenty

Source: Marbles Kids Museum

It's that time of year again when we look for the perfect present for our family and friends. There are always so many different personalities to look for, from your clothes horse friend, car buddy, wine lover, beer connoisseur, and LEGO geek. But what about your tech nerd? Well below is a list of tech gadgets and gizmos that any technology nerd would love to have in their daily lives.

So in no particular order, let's find something they would love:

Anker® 2nd Gen Astro Mini 3200mAh Lipstick-Sized Portable External Battery Charger

Have someone who loves their phone, a lot. They are always on social media, texting, taking photos, playing games, etc. to the point they run their battery down half way through the day. Then they are constantly hunting for a wall outlet? This would be perfect for them.  Small (about the size of a tube of lipstick) and very portable it can concealed even in the tightest of jean front pockets. It has enough charge for two full charges of an iPhone 5/5s or an entire Galaxy Note 4.  With this, they will easily make it through the day with their smartphone, no matter what they do on it.

So what if you know a whole technology family that goes on family trips, vacations, or even running errands and they all run out of battery. Then this is for them. About the size of a deck of cards, but an inch or two long, with two USB ports and enough charge for six and a half iPhone 5/5s or almost 3 Galaxy Note 4s.  This device can even charge two devices at the same time, with one being an iPad Air. From personal experience I have owned a first generation for over two years, has taken a beating, charged over a hundred devices, and is still going.  A definite need for a technology family.

JayBird BlueBuds X Sport Bluetooth Headphones

Source: Amazon.com

As a collector of earphones and headphones I am always looking for the perfect pair of each. As of this post, these are the perfect earphones available at consumer pricing (less than $500). They are bluetooth so you don't have to worry about cords, come with 6 different ear pieces to get the perfect fit as to not worry about them falling out, inline controls for music and phone, and a solid 8 hours of constant usage battery life. So light weight and compact (comes with it's own carrying case) I never go anywhere without these and charge from empty to full in just over an hour.  Clear and balanced sound whether it be video/music playback or making a phone call. They do come with a some what heavy price tag but well worth it that you will use them every day and keep them for a very long time.  Highly recommended for anyone that uses their phone a lot, whether it be video/music or lots of phone calls.

Anker® 40W 5-Port Desktop USB Charger with PowerIQ™ Technology + 5 Micro USB to USB Cables

Wall chargers are everywhere in everyone's homes. You see them randomly protruding in the living room, kitchen, bedroom, and maybe even the bathroom. What if you had one device that had 5 high amp fast charging ports and only needed to use one wall outlet?  Another Anker product (low price very high quality) that you can plug your Android, iPhone, or tablets (up to 5) into it all in one place. Great for just at home or taking on family vacations so that no one forgets their wall charger. This version comes with 5 microUSB 2.0 cords but there is a less expensive version that just comes with the charger.

Pebble Smartwatch

Source: Amazon.com

A recent innovation in technology, smartwatches tell time (duh) with different watch faces but can also track your steps, provide helpful information, and notifications from your email, text, and social media. Right now they are not incredibly powerful and may not be for everyone but if you or someone you know is curious about trying one, then the Pebble is the perfect starting point. Inexpensive (less than $100), works with an Android, iPhone, or Windows phone, and can track steps, give a robust list of notifications, and can last 2 to 3 days on a single charge unlike others that need charging daily).  I have one and love it because when spending time with family and friends, it keeps me away from my phone when I get notifications. I see them on my Pebble and if they are unimportant, I have no reason to grab my phone from my pocket because we all know that once you grab it to check a text or social media post, you will continue to play with it. With a Pebble, you check your notification, deem it important or not, and act accordingly.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones

"These". When someone asks me what are the best headphones for their price (under $200) out there at the consumer level.  If you have someone that loves watching movies privately, editing videos and music, or loves listening to music in it's almost perfect form (right amount of highs, mids, and lows), then these are the headsets for them. Beats, Bose, Soul, Skull Candy, etc are horrible compared to the quality Audio Technica provides.  Don't get your kids Beats or your Mom/Dad Bose, get them these.

Roku 3

Any family or friends who are cord cutters (no cable or satellite) and need something to watch other than HD antenna? The Roku 3 IS the solution. A small box that you connect to your home internet to watch Netflix, Hulu, Hulu Plus, Crackle, and more. One great feature is the headphone jack in the remote (which is bluetooth so you can hide the box away from sight) that allows you to plug in any headphones to listen to the programing while not disturbing others in the room (one significant other sleeping and the other watching TV for example).  Many people, myself included know this to be true, once you cut the cord and go Roku, you never go back.

Ultimate Ears (U.E.) BOOM bluetooth wireless speaker

Source: Amazon.com

This is the best bluetooth speaker you can buy for your money as of this posting. 14 to 15 hours of constant streaming, water splash proof (don't throw it in water), stain proof with a rubber outer skin, sand and dust resistant, 50 feet bluetooth range, and pair able with another UE BOOM to make for surround sound. With 360 degree full, rich, and clear speakers you can full a large room with whatever music you are into. Other speakers have higher price tags, lower battery life, not as equipped to deal with the elements, or worst speakers where this has it all. If your loved one moves to blast music from their tablet or phone anywhere and everywhere, this is the bluetooth speaker to make you their holiday favorite.

Motorola Hint

Source: Motorola.com

This bluetooth headset is not the best on the market it is the most unique and definitely great for your early adopting technology family member or friend. Very discreet with only two hours of battery life, it fits in your ear comfortably with very clear sound for listening to music or making phone calls. The two hour battery life is combatted with a small carrying case that you use to recharge the headset up to 5 times on a single case charge. So if you use that in your car while driving to work, you can put it back in it's carrying case to charge until you need it for hands free calling again. Then when you get home, charge the case and the headset at the same time when you plug in the case.  Again not the best bluetooth headset because of the headsets individual battery life (without the case) but definitely the coolest and most discreet one out there.
