Dark Sky is already one of the most comprehensive and accurate weather apps available, so it’s a pleasant surprise to find that not only has Dark Sky introduced an update, but it’s one of the biggest updates the developer has ever released.
Considered by the developer a “big honkin’ update,” Dark Sky now offers a detailed hour-by-hour timeline for the next 24 hours, breaking data down by precipitation, temperature, wind, humidity and even UV index (strength of sunburn-producing ultraviolet radiation). That’s a lot of information to digest, but it’s incredibly useful—and it’s displayed in an easy-to-read layout.
Current Dark Sky users will feel right at home when the app is first launched. You’ll still see the current temperature (including the low and high temperatures for the day), along with what’s coming up in the next hour. But now you’ll see the new 24-hour timeline, complete with hourly temperature changes and other information, like whether or not it’ll rain. Scroll all the way down and you’ll see when the sun will rise and set, in addition to wind speed information and more.

Scroll across the app and you’ll see a 7-day forecast, along with predicted breakdowns for a particular day. Scroll over one more time and you’ll be able to set alerts for your location. In addition to setting alerts for weather, you can also ask for a daily summary at 7 a.m., and custom alerts for temperature, precipitation probability, snowfall and more. You can also turn on an option to get notifications for government-issues severe weather alerts and warnings, and there’s a Do Not Disturb option so you’re not bombarded with alerts while you sleep.
If you’re an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus user, you can opt to have your device provide Dark Sky with pressure sensor data, which the developer says has the potential to “dramatically improve our short-term forecasts in the future.”
The update is free if you already own Dark Sky, otherwise it’s $3.99 in the App Store.
