One of the best things about Netflix is that there are absolutely no ads. You can binge watch all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer without ever seeing a single commercial. That may not be the case for long.
Cord Cutters News reports that Netflix is testing pre-roll ads with a small group of viewers. The company confirmed the experiment in a statement, but suggested it won’t get a full launch. “We are always testing new things via the service, many of which never see a rollout,” a spokesperson told the site. “We have nothing more to add at this point.”
The commercials apparently run for about 20 seconds or longer and exclusively promote Netflix’s original shows. Some people reportedly have been able they can skip through them, similar to the way pre-roll ads work on YouTube, but not everyone has that option. The company also recently tested post-roll ads for customers watching on an Xbox One.
If Netflix does roll out ads for everyone, it could be as controversial as the company’s infamous Quickster debacle, especially considering it’s a premium service that requires a monthly fee.
