GoPro's new budget Hero+ Wi-Fi action cam for $199
GoPro all the things just got a little less expensive.
GoPro wants to make sure it has the action camera for you no matter how much you're looking to spend. The company's announcing a new entry-level action camera today, the GoPro Hero+ Wi-Fi. It's an action camera that slots in right between the base model Hero+ ($129.99) and the more expensive Hero+ LCD ($299.99), due for release on October 4th.
You shouldn't be surprised to hear that it includes the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities of the more expensive model while ditching the LCD touchscreen. The price is also right between those two models: it comes in at $199.99 — a pretty good place to be in for the holiday shopping season.
On the outside, the new Hero+ Wi-Fi looks just like the base model, but on the inside the camera equipment comes from the better Hero+ LCD. That means you'll be able to record at resolutions up to 1080p at 60fps, compared to just 30fps on the entry-level Hero+. The camera can also take 8-megapixel stills, and it's waterproof down to 40 meters (131 feet). Notably, you won't be able to record any awe-worthy slow-mo shots — you'll need the fancier (and more expensive) Hero 4 cameras for that.
Other than the slightly improved sensor, the $70 separating the new model from the Hero+ will get you Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity so you can use your smartphone to frame shots, change camera settings, and share the videos you capture. The feature makes a pretty significant difference in day-to-day use with the camera, especially when the camera itself lacks a color display for watching what you record.
The company is also making another pricing tweak today: its miniature Hero 4 Session action camera is dropping from a pricey $399.99 down to $299.99. The camera's far smaller than the main flagship Hero 4 models, making it easier to carry around all day as you scuba dive off the coast and climb up mountains. But it lacks a display, which probably made it a hard sell against the Hero 4 Silver at the exact same price — the $100 drop announced today should change that.
