Uber confirmed Thursday that it is now officially testing self-driving cars on the streets of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Uber chose the Ford Fusion for its autonomous vehicle testing, noting that a driver will remain behind the wheel even when the car is driving itself. The tests are being performed and studied by Uber’s Special Advanced Technologies Center (ATC).
“Real-world testing is critical to our efforts to develop self-driving technology,” Uber said in a blog post Thursday, noting that Pittsburgh was particularly compelling given its range of road types and varying weather conditions.
The company said the Ford Fusion vehicles are outfitted with special sensors “including radars, laser scanners, and high resolution cameras to map details of the environment.” The company said its tests are still “in the early days” and that it’s focused on making sure the technology is safe enough not only for the people riding in its cars, but everyone else on the road, too.
“We’re excited that Uber has chosen the Steel City as they explore new technologies that can improve people’s lives — through increased road safety, less congestion, and more efficient and smarter cities,” mayor William Peduto said.
