Star Wars VIII official title may have been leaked (SPOILERS)
Put on your tinfoil hats, ladies and germs, because we’re wading deep into rumor territory here. Anyone with some time and forgery skills can create a believable fake, and that’s exactly what we might be getting here. But what if this is legit?
Warning there might be potential spoilers ahead.
Following a potential scene description from earlier this week, a video has dropped purporting to show of the title of Star Wars: Episode VIII. Remember, Episode VIII isn’t hitting theaters until next December, over a year from now, so it seems a little early for Disney to start sharing official details. Be that as it may, here goes: The official title forEpisode VIII will reportedly be Star Wars: Fall of the Resistance.
Disney didn’t reveal the official title for The Force Awakens until November of 2014, a little over a year ahead of the movie’s December 2015 release. It’s worth noting thatEpisode VIII was originally scheduled to come out next May, and filming has been going on for a while, which means Disney might be at a point where it feels comfortable divulging information.
The reveal allegedly comes from marketing materials meant for this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Europe, which takes place from July 15 to July 17. If Fall of the Resistanceis indeed the title of Episode VIII, then Finn, Rey, Poe and the rest of the crew are in for some tough times. We already know Episode VIII is going to be “darker” in tone compared to The Force Awakens, and Fall of the Resistance reflects that quite nicely. The First Order was humiliated in The Force Awakens but it sounds like they’re coming back with a vengeance.
The title also matches up well with the second film in the original trilogy, which was called The Empire Strikes Back. We can speculate all day about what Fall of the Resistance actually means, but we don’t even know if it’s the confirmed title. Again, it’s unlikely this is legit, and we’re not so sure the title works, but we thought we’d discuss it anyway.
We’ll keep a look out for any future developments. Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently scheduled for a Dec. 15, 2017 release.
