Tesla Model S driver caught sleeping at the wheel while his car drove in traffic

I pine for the day when I can get into my car, hit auto-pilot, and fall asleep until I reach my destination. Turns out, so does this unknown Tesla Model S driver.

It’s unclear where this video originates from (ugh vertical video needs to be abolished), but it’s pretty easy to see what’s going on. A driver appears to be asleep behind the wheel while Tesla’s auto-pilot software keeps up with the flow of traffic. This is what Tesla’s autonomous features are designed to do, but never is it OK to snooze when you’re operating a vehicle, especially among other drivers.

I’d love nothing more than to be able to take a nap on my way to Florida for vacation or another city to see a concert. Alas, while the video above is encouraging only if for that fact that autonomous driving could arrive in my lifetime, sleeping while driving is never a good idea. What would a ticket for that even be like?

Sir, I pulled you over for… sleeping?

With more than 100 million autonomous miles logged, it sounds like Tesla’s autopilot software is doing pretty OK. However, the technology isn’t perfect, which means it’s probably a good idea to stay alert behind the wheel no matter how advanced it seems.
