Amazon introduces Prime Exclusive smartphones at discounted prices with lock screen ads

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it will start selling special “Prime Exclusive” unlocked smartphone to Prime members at a steep discount, so long as they don’t mind living with advertisements on the devices.

Amazon is kicking off the deal with the fourth generation Moto G, priced at $149.99, down $50 from its full retail price, and the BLU R1 HD, just $49.99, a full 50-percent discount from its standard $99 retail price. There’s a catch, however. Amazon said the phones will ship with special software that provides “personalized offers and ads, including deals and product recommendations, displayed on the phone’s lock screen.”

This isn’t always bad; in fact, I usually appreciate the products Amazon recommends to me. But there’s no escaping them, they’re stuck right on your lockscreen (though, hackers will probably find a way around this). Amazon said its customers dig the similar pricing mechanism that is employs with its Kindle with Special Offers products.

“We currently offer low prices supported by lockscreen offers and ads on our Fire tablets and Kindle e-readers, and they’ve been a hit—in fact, the vast majority of customers choose the lower-priced option. Now we’re lowering prices in a similar way on new, unlocked smartphones, working with two of our best-selling brands, BLU and Motorola,” Amazon’s vice president of consumer electronics Laura Orvidas said.
