Apple launches 2TB cloud storage option ahead of iPhone launch event for $19.99

Apple has introduced a new storage tier for iCloud that grants 2TB of space for $19.99 a month. This pricing is similar to Google Drive’s terabyte pricing, which starts at $9.99 a month for 1TB, and is slightly more than Microsoft’s 1TB plan for $6.99 a month. Apple’s new plan is not replacing a previous one, so you’ll still be able to pay $0.99 a month for 50GB, $2.99 for 200GB, or $9.99 for 1TB. Mac and iOS users who don't pay for iCloud also get a default amount of 5GB for free.

For those who like to read into subtle Apple moves, the timing of this change could indicate a new storage tier for the upcoming iPhone 7. Apple is set to announce the device, as well as the larger iPhone 7 Plus, next week on September 7th. Given that the largest iCloud storage tier has always been eight times that of the largest capacity iPhone, there is a possibility we may see a new 256GB iPhone 7 Plus announced. There is also a 256GB model of the iPad Pro already on sale today. Yet with cloud storage as cheap as it is, it's not clear anyone needs an iPhone that big.
