thatgeekdad Holiday Gift Guide 2017 part 4: Tablets

For as long as gift-giving has been a tradition, there’s also been the inability to come up with good gift ideas. Whether it’s for your mom, dad, sister, brother, partner, friend, colleague, they, them, him, her, cat, dog, secret Santa, or for a White Elephant party, it can often be tricky to select the perfect present for your recipient. Price can also be a huge factor in holiday shopping — whether you have a tight budget and / or a long list of friends and family members to buy gifts for. This season can make things pretty rough on your wallet.

So as the 2017 holidays approach, I have put together a tech gift guide of the many wonderful things that would make great presents for all ages, sizes, genders, and budgets. At the very least, I hope these recommendations spark an idea for what you might gift your loved ones.

Apple iPad Pro 10.5

Honestly, this is probably the only one I should have on here, other than the Amazon Fire 7. This is the best tablet out there for some productivity (light emailing, notes, short document typing), media consumption (Netflix, YouTube, HBOgo), and playing games. It's also got amazing hardware that will make it last the average user easily a good 4-5 years. This tablet is the definition of future proofing. It even has a really good rear camera so you can take good photos with it (I can't believe I just said that). It is the same camera that is on the iPhone 7. But with that future proofing comes a price starting at $649 for the base model with Wi-Fi.

Apple iPad Pro 9.7

While this is last year's iPad Pro, it is still a very capable tablet for light productivity, gaming, and media consumption. When this was made, it was a little future proof but obviously since it's one year old, it's a little less than the Pro 10.5. Still, for an average user, this thing could easily last 3-4 years starting this year. The camera is good mimicking somewhere between a iPhone 6 and 6s if tablet photography is your thing. A little less expensive than this year's model, it is still a very solid choice.

Apple iPad 5th generation

The non pro model for 2017. It's a lot more affordable than both pro models and very capable for media consumption, social media, playing most games (might struggle a bit with high end graphic ones), and very little productivity (notes and email). Base model starts at $329 and for how many apps are available for iPads and being able to use iPhone only apps on it as well, if you are going to get a tablet for traveling, on the couch, lying in bed, or overall relaxing doing the above activities, this is the one you should get.

Amazon Fire HD 10

Your first and only stop for a $100 tablet. If your target price for yourself or someone else is $100, then this is it. New for 2017, a good screen size for social media and media consumption with a built in Alexa and a Full HD 1080p screen, this is a good bargain for using around the house and car and plane travels. Note, the lowest price model at $100 does come with ads every time you wake to unlock the device and only has 32GB of storage. However, it does have expandable storage with a microSD card and thankfully, those are really inexpensive on Amazon. A good gift anyone who has never owned a tablet will enjoy.

Amazon Fire 7

The first tablet that comes in a six pack (Buy five get one free). It's the famous $50 tablet you have heard about that was as low as $30 last year. This is an upgrade one that is still $50 and hopefully this Holiday shopping season, it will be $30 again. Again, the base model is $50 with 8GB of storage (expandable storage as well) and ads on the lock screen. This tablet would be social media, very basic gaming, and light media consumption. Alexa built in, not quite HD screen, and a low price. This is the basic beginner tablet for everyone, including kids.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3

This is here if you or your gift recipient need or wants an Android tablet. Its the best overall Android tablet for 2017 running Android 7.1 (the most current is 8.0) Nougat and have the up to date security patches. Coming in at $480, it has a good processor, 32GB storage (expandable storage available as well), great for light productivity (word documents, notes, and email), gaming, social media, and media consumption. For the media consumption, this tablet has a 2K HDR screen. I do caution buying Android tablets that are not made by Google. They don't get updated much, operating system and security patches, and tend to show their age in performance after the first year.
