T-Mobile just announced the Simple Starter plan, offering customers a single phone line with unlimited text, talk and 500MB of 4G LTE data for just $40 per month starting April 12. The new plan doesn’t cover international service (including their unlimited text and data in over 100 countries outside the United States), which the carrier offers for free in more than 100 countries around the world with its Simple Choice plans.
The Simple Starter plan is the first of several new announcements T-Mobile says it has planned for the near future. The carrier also notes that like with all its plans, customers won’t end up paying costly overage fees if they go over their data limit. While not covered in the original press release, we reached out to T-Mobile for clarification of what would happen to your data once you reached your limit. “The Simple Starter plan is an unlimited talk and unlimited text with up to 500MB of high-speed 4G LTE data.” a T-Mobile spokesperson said. “Once a user reaches the 500MB of high-speed data, the service is suspended, with the peace of mind that no overage fees will apply. For additional data, on-demand data passes are available via My.T-Mobile.com, visiting a TMO store or calling Care.”
T-Mobile’s new plan is a clever strategy for drawing in new customers by offering an even lower price tier for LTE service, but keep in mind that 500MB is hardly enough for the average smartphone user, and falling back to 3G isn’t going to be ideal. Where I do see this being something to look into are for first time smartphone users or parents thinking of getting their teenager a smartphone but scared of the overages that can be caused with other companies. If it turns out that 500MB isn't going to be enough for the flood of information that is tempting to either situation, you can always upgrade into a Simpler Choice plan at any time and still use the same phone.
