New MacBook announced and it’s incredibly thin with a Retina display

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage on Monday during the company’s Spring Forward press conference. During his speech, he said that Apple currently has the “strongest Mac lineup ever,” and that Apple’s MacBook has outgrown the industry over the past 10 years. Last year, for example, the industry shrank by 2 percent while Mac sales jumped. “We challenged ourselves to reinvent the notebook,” Cook said. “And we did it.”

It’s not called a MacBook Air, instead, it’s just called “MacBook.” It weighs just 2 pounds and is just 13.1mm thin, which is even thinner than the MacBook Air, which was 17.3mm thick. It features an all-metal enclosure with antennas embedded right inside. It sports a full-sized keyboard that runs to the edges of the notebook. Apple said it’s an “all new” keyboard that prevents wobbling of keys as you type on it. Apple calls this a “butterfly mechanism” and it features a single assembly with a stainless steel dome switch that Apple says is more precise. Each key has its own LED.

The new MacBook features a 12-inch display with a 2304 x 1440-pixel resolution and edge-to-edge cover glass. It also features a new glass trackpad with a taptic engine that simulates feedback, instead of a real click motion. It features the option to “force click” on the trackpad to execute tasks depending on the pressure you apply.

Other features include an aluminum fanless-design and a 1.3GHz Intel Core M processor that can be Turbocharged up to 2.9GHz. Apple also loaded the MacBook with batteries using specially contoured battery cells to take up as much of the empty space inside as possible. “We don’t want to ship air, we want to ship batteries,” Schiller said. As a result, Apple expects users should get all day battery life, or up to 9 hours of Web surfing or 10 hours of iTunes.

Apple said it expects users to rely on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections for most of their peripherals, but said that the notebook has a single connector that supports VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB and power all in one connection. That’s the USB-C connection that we’ve heard about before.

The new MacBook will ship in gold, silver and space gray and the price starts at $1,299 with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. You can configure it with more storage and a faster chip for $1,599. The new MacBook will be available on April 10, and it will exist with the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro.
