Google now offers Android users a Free App of the Week

Google has launched a “Free App of the Week” promotion in Google Play that gives Android users the chance to get their hands on a paid title free of charge. The offer is part of Google’s new Family section, so you can expect all giveaways to be child-friendly.

The offer is similar to that Apple and Amazon have been offering customers for some time; users get the opportunity to download a free app they would normally have to pay for, and the title changes each week. The only difference is, Google’s offer will only include certain titles for now.

Given that they’re all family-friendly, most of the giveaways are likely to be children’s games with an “Everybody” rating. The first title is Daniel Tiger Grr-fici Feelings, a game from PBS Kids, which is normally priced at $2.99.

It’s unclear whether Google will open up the Free App of the Week promotion to all categories eventually, but we certainly hope so. On iOS, it’s a great way to discover great apps and games you may not have purchased otherwise — and no one can turn down free apps.

To find the Free App of the Week, simply navigate to the Family section in the Play Store and look for the big green banner seen in the picture above.
