Star Wars: The Force Awakens Theatrical Trailer and Analysis

Somewhere there was also a Football game

During halftime on Monday Night Football on ESPN, Disney and Lucas Arts finally debut the theatrical trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Just before the kick off of Monday Night Football tickets went on sale around the U.S. for marathons and midnight showings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. For the last 48 hours there have been teasers to this trailer all over TV and the internet and it was well worth the wait.

Here are a few thoughts to take away from this trailer:

  • In other teasers we got the feeling Rey was a loner, scavenger, owner of BB-8 and now nothing special....yet
  • Finn was raised (bred?) for one purpose only, most likely a storm trooper but now has his faith and beliefs shaken so much he doesn't know who he is or what he is doing
  • Captain Phasma looks sort of like a First Order Stormtrooper but is in a role almost that of Darth Vader. Speaking of...
  • Kylo Ren was/is Darth Vader's apprentice and was able to retrieve Vader's old helmet
  • Kylo Ren states he will finish what Vader started. This is most likely the crusade to hunt down and kill the Jedi. If so, then Vader's betrayal of the Emperor must have been kept a secret
  • Rey asks Han about the stories of the Jedi and the Dark Side (Sith) as if in one generation (30 years) heroes and villains have been reduced to fairy tales, possibly by the First Order to help maintain some control. Han lets her know the Jedi and Dark Side are/were real and the look of shock and almost disbelief is real. Could this information be what shook Finn's faith and beliefs?
  • We see Kylo Ren in a rain storm with his "squad" that doesn't look anything like the First Order Stormtroopers. Bounty Hunters?
  • Poe Dameron gets into a serious all out fighter battle with the new TIE fighters
  •  We see the same footage of R2-D2 and what we all presume is Luke but he is not in the official poster
  • Then we are shown what looks like a variation of the Imperial Shuttle landing at night in the middle of a fiery battle field where the First Order Stormtroopers, Captain Phasma, and Kylo Ren are cleaning up.
  • Quick shot of Rey looking angry/sad as if someone just died
  • Finn, Han, and Chewie are being arrested or taken by the First Order with the voice of a woman saying the Force is calling to you. This is the same voice who in the beginning of the trailer asks Rey who she is and Rey responds "I'm no one."
  • What looks like another all out fight between X-wings and TIE fighters but this time in a snow mountain climate and not a lake and green fields area with the previous battle. This is also the backdrop of snow and mountains that we have seen in previous teaser trailers where a high up official of the First Order is speaking to a vast army of Stormtroopers.
  • More action shots that include Rey fighting mad and shooting a blaster
  • Han is holding and comforting Leia
  • Then the infamous snow forest scene where Finn has Luke's lightsaber facing off against Kylo Ren without his helmet. Kylo Ren has a lot of hair.
  • Then we hear the same voice from the beginning talking about letting "it" in. Is this the Force awakening in these new heroes Rey, Poe, and Finn? Is this what the First Order is doing? Trying to hunt down and suppress the Force inside these new heroes before it spreads again. Is that why in a generation Jedi and the Dark Side have been reduced to myth and stories? A propaganda campaign as first but now since the have seen the Force spreading and awakening in more people the First Order have to actively hunt these people down?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives in theaters December 18th, 2015.
