This is the end for Harry Potter with the release of The Cursed Child

Billed as the eighth Harry Potter story, The Cursed Child officially opened on London’s West End Saturday night, while a copy of the script is now available in bookstores. According to J.K. Rowling, the story of her famous magician is now at an end.

During the premiere of the play, Rowling was asked if the The Cursed Child represented the beginning of a new era of stories for the character. She confirmed that that Harry’s story was now over: "This is the next generation, you know. So, I'm thrilled to see it realized so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now."

The Cursed Child takes place nineteen years after the events of The Deathly Hallows, the last published novel and follows Harry, Ron, Hermione and Draco in their adult lives, as well as the lives of their children, who struggle with the legacies of their parents. The play has recently been extended to run through December 2017 at the Palace Theatre in London, and could expand to other countries in the coming years.

While Rowling has indicated that she is not planning any additional Harry Potter stories, there is more in store for the franchise. A new film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will open on November 18th, taking place decades before the Harry Potter saga. Two additional sequels planned to open in the coming years.
