Apple delays AirPods rollout, don’t expect them in by the end of October

Apple’s most divisive gadget since the Apple Pencil has been delayed. You’ll have to suffer through using wires for a little while longer.

Announced at the iPhone 7 event, Apple’s AirPods are wireless earbud-style headphones that sport dual accelerometers, IR sensors, and the ability to easily summon Siri.

They also come embedded with a custom-designed W1 chip, which Apple claims produces a better wireless connection and improved sound. According to Apple, the AirPods will provide users with 5 hours of continuous playback on a single charge.

The Cupertino company originally promised a late October release but said the accessory is not quite ready to ship yet. Apple provided a statement breaking the news:

The early response to AirPods has been incredible. We don’t believe in shipping a product before it’s ready, and we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers.

It’s unclear what caused the delay, nor do we know when they’ll start shipping. But with the busy holiday season almost upon us, you can bet Apple will have them out sooner rather than later.

If you’re interested in picking up a pair for yourself, you can purchase them from Apple for $159.
