Walmart will be selling iPhone 5c for $79 on contract and iPhone 5s for $189 on contract
In an unprecedented move, Walmart announced today that it will offer the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c at an immediate discount of $10 and $20, respectively. The retail chain will start taking pre-orders for Apple’s iPhone 5c tomorrow on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, though the devices won’t be available for pickup until Sept. 20.
Dropping the iPhone 5c from Apple’s set price of $99 down to $79 and the iPhone 5s from $199 to $189 could have implications beyond Walmart’s own sales. Best Buy often offers price matching on consumer electronics, meaning the price drop could quickly be copied by other U.S. retailers in an effort to keep up. Then again, if Walmart is offering the cheapest deal on the iPhone, the retailer may quickly run out of its new stock before the competition can react.
Apple announced the flagship iPhone 5s and mid-range iPhone 5c at a special event earlier this week. The company’s new top tier smartphone offers a faster processor, improved camera and a built-in fingerprint sensor all packed into the same body as the iPhone 5. Meanwhile, the iPhone 5c comes equipped with the very similar specs as the iPhone 5, now packed inside a redesigned plastic casing that comes in a variety of colors.
